Our house is where we should feel the most at ease and secure but it is not always secure from intruders or threats whether natural or man-made. In the United States, there were 903,627 counts of burglary in 2020, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

If you live in an area with high crime or a place that recently had a break-in, you should do everything you can to defend your house and keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Here are seven tips on how to make your home more secure:

1. Install burglar alarms.

Burglar alarms are tried and true methods of protecting your house. They are simple to install and, in most cases, fairly priced. You can even connect them to your phone to keep track of what’s going on when you’re away or even when you are in.

While burglar alarms will not deter a determined burglar from trying, the police will be notified immediately if someone does something unusual and the alarm goes off. These alarms serve as a deterrent to would-be intruders and are an essential piece of home security equipment since intruders are aware that they will be spotted if they break in.

2. Use a doorbell camera.

If you want to keep an eye on your house with a device that does not cost much and is easy to set up, a doorbell camera is a great choice. This device affords you peace of mind because if someone breaks in or even comes close to your house, they will be caught on camera.

With a doorbell camera, you can see who is at the door before you decide whether to let them in or not. This keeps unwanted people from getting into your home.

On July 21, 2021, a fugitive out of California, USA named Christopher David Sumbs went to a house in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and knocked on the door. Thanks to the doorbell camera, the woman behind the door, who was home alone, did not let the stranger in and was able to ask for help.

3. Choose smart locks over regular locks.

A smart lock can be controlled remotely if it is installed. This is useful if you’re going out of town and want to ensure your home is secure. You’ll have total control over your home wherever you are.

With a built-in video camera, a siren to scare off intruders and a speaker system for communication, a smart lock can be used to check on your pet while you are away from home. If everything appears to be in order, you can send an alert notifying the pet that it is safe to go outside. If anything appears suspicious, you will be alerted.

.

4. Keep a personal property inventory.

A personal property inventory is a written record of all your possessions. This list will be required if you need to file a claim with your insurance carrier. You may be asked to show receipts for all products listed so keep a copy in a secure location and update your list on a regular basis. Even if you don’t have a home insurance audit coming up, it’s a good idea to prepare this list. In the event of a burglary or fire, for example, an accurate, up-to-date inventory will be pivotal in having all of your items replaced within a reasonable time.

Insurance is critical. You may be eligible for a discount on certain items and services if you obtain insurance before purchasing them like a home alarm system.

.

5. Install flood sensors.

If your home has a basement, you should install a flood sensor, which costs about $20. It can keep your valuables safe by warning you when water levels begin to rise.

Flood sensors are constructed using wire loops with battery-powered alarms and should be installed in places in your home where flooding is possible, such as the garage and under the sink. When it comes in contact with water, the alarm will go off, alerting you of the problem before it becomes more serious or even life-threatening. However, while flood sensors can pick up small amounts of moisture, they may set off false alarms.

.

6. Keep your home free of carbon monoxide (CO).

On December 18, 2017, K-pop boy band SHINee member Kim Jong Hyun committed suicide by CO poisoning. He was 27.

Since CO is odorless and colorless, it is impossible to know whether you’ve been exposed to it or any other poisonous gas without the proper detection equipment. When you are exposed to CO, its molecules will displace the oxygen in your body, which will lead to poisoning.

Keep your family away from this poison by installing CO detectors, which are available in most hardware stores or on e-commerce websites. You may inquire into the various types of gas detectors that can come in very handy around the home.

.

7. Do not keep a spare key outside the house.

If your home or gate is secured with a padlock, keeping a spare key outside is a bad idea. Criminals are getting more and more innovative and you cannot expect your spare key outside to be safe from intruders.

It is strongly recommended that you upgrade your lock to a smart lock system, such as a fingerprint lock, card swipe lock or retina scan lock. Keyless access has shown to be more effective than using padlocks and most keyless entries include an alarm or other ways of smart notification if there is any attempt at forced entry.

There are several types of home security systems available and it can be difficult to choose one. In the process of selecting a home security system, you should consider home insurance, which has many benefits and should not be overlooked when building or renting a new home.
