The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 15, “Waiting for Superman,” which aired Tuesday, June 28, on The CW.
Superman & Lois Season 2 gave Clark Kent his deadliest threat in the form of Ally Allston — the show’s take on Parasite. Not only did she de-power the Man of Steel, she almost destroyed the entire world. To deal with Ally and the evil Bizarro versions of his loved ones that she sent over from another universe, Clark was forced to rely on his own allies like his son Jordan, whose powers expanded significantly, and John Henry and Natalie Irons.
Still, it was clear that the season was building up to a Superman vs. Ally showdown. John Henry attempted to stop Ally himself by going through the Shuster Mines portal, but he failed and nearly died. Right when it seemed like Ally would achieve her sinister objective of merging worlds, Superman & Lois turned her greatest power — her ability to absorb energy and the life essence of people — against her.
Ally had previously killed the Bizarro Tal-Rho using this ability, and in Season 2, Episode 15, “Waiting for Superman,” when Earth’s Tal-Rho tried to fight her she nearly murdered him too. Clark knew all too well how powerful she was after Ally’s ability had sapped him of his abilities earlier in the season. Luckily, Tal-Rho escaped and helped Clark with a new plan: escorting his brother to the sun. After a warm exchange, Tal-Rho threw his brother directly into the sun, allowing the Man of Steel to soak in the solar radiation, fix his damaged cells and restore his superpowers.
A confident Kal emerged stronger than ever for a brutal brawl across the skies of the two worlds — and when Ally got close to him, her powers backfired. She tried to suck Superman’s energy out, but now he had too much of it. Ally suffered a power overload because she underestimated how much power the Kryptonian could store inside him.
As Ally suffered from the overload, the reinvigorated Superman punched her, splitting her into her two selves due to the unstable nature of her atoms. Then as they fell to Earth, he swooped down, caught them and separated the villains. The two were quickly taken to prison for their crimes, and Superman & Lois Season 2 got a happy ending after all.
This sequence was a brilliant moment that showcased not only Clark’s physical might, but also his mental strength. His Hail Mary tactic played into Parasite’s ego, greed and lust for power. Superman showed his bravery once again by risking his life for humanity in not one but two realms.
Developed for television by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing, both seasons of Superman & Lois are available on the CW app.
