As we approach pre-season, Ange Postecoglou will have some decisions on his hands regarding where those on the fringes of his squad fit within the plans next campaign.
The clearout appears to already be underway for the Celtic manager, with several young players departing the club at the end of last week.
In recent days, defender Liam Scales has also been linked to fellow Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, with a loan move looking likely for the Irishman.
Of course, Scales won’t be the last player to head out on loan from Parkhead.
Several youngsters will also be looking for a temporary spell elsewhere in the hope of earning some first-team experience before returning to the club.
Here are three players who could benefit from a loan spell next season.
Liam Shaw
The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder previously had a spell out on loan last season with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.
The Well secured European Football. But, it was a disappointing second half of the season for Graham Alexander’s men and Liam Shaw.
He featured just eight times for his loan side; just two of those appearances coming from the start with his game time at Fir Park being restricted.
Last season’s loan move could have been a huge benefit for the 21-year old. However, after the lack of game time, there will be doubts over whether Shaw has enough just yet to break into the squad under Postecoglou.
Another spell out on loan next campaign could do the Englishman a world of good, and hopefully, this time around, he is able to receive consistent minutes.
Johnny Kenny
The young Irishman arrived at the club during the January transfer window and featured for the Celtic B side towards the end of their campaign.
Not many were sure what sort of role Kenny would hold on his arrival. However, he was spotted regularly training with Postecoglou’s first team alongside his involvement with Tommy McIntyre’s side.
Reports suggested in January that the young striker could have been set for a loan move as soon as he joined the Hoops. But Covid isolation and injury put those suggestions to bed.
This coming season could be a good chance for the 18-year old striker to receive first-team football elsewhere, with Kyogo and Giorgos Giakoumakis being the two firm choices for the figurehead of the first team.
A loan move in Scotland would be ideal to see what sort of level Kenny can reach against the opposition that Celtic face on a weekly basis.
Owen Moffat
Moffat was a standout performer for the Celtic B side in the attacking frontline last season, finishing with 22 goal contributions in 31 games.
The young winger also made his first-team debut during the crucial 2-1 win over Ross County in December and was brought off the bench during the Premier Sports cup final.
After spending an entire season with the B team, a loan move feels like the next step for the 20-year old to take in his development path with the club.
Postecoglou is clearly a fan of the winger, having first involved Moffat in the early stages of pre-season last year. So, he may look to do similar in 2022 before allowing him to go out and get more first-team experience.
More players to follow out on loan
Having sent 13 players out on loan last campaign, it is more than likely we will see a number of Postecoglou’s squad do the same in 2022/23.
We have seen the success of such moves over the years, with players such as Callum McGregor and Kristoffer Ajer enjoying time away. Before returning and becoming a vital part of the first team.
Those are the sort of examples that Owen Moffat, Johnny Kenny and Liam Shaw will be hoping to follow and become a success at Celtic.
